5 Seychelles Fly Fishing Atolls - Which One is Right for You?
The Seychelles outer islands offer some of the most isolated, pristine fly fishing on earth. These are protected waters, largely untouched by commercial fishing, and they will give you shots at fish of a lifetime. The Indian Ocean clarity, the white sand flats, the diversity of species - there is nowhere quite like it.
Choosing which atoll to book is where most anglers get stuck. Each one fishes differently, suits different experience levels, and offers a different kind of experience both on and off the water. This guide breaks down the five most popular atolls to help you decide.
Atoll | Key species | Experience | Budget |
|---|---|---|---|
Alphonse | Bonefish, Milkfish, Triggers | All levels | $$$ |
Cosmoledo | GT, Triggers | Intermediate | $$$ |
Farquhar | GT, Bumpheads, Triggers | Intermediate | $$$$ |
Astove | GT, Permit, Bonefish | Intermediate-Advanced | $$$ |
Providence | GT, Bumpheads, Triggers | Intermediate | $$$$+ |
Alphonse Island

Alphonse is the most diverse fly fishery in the Seychelles - and for most anglers, it's the right starting point.
The bonefishing alone is enough to justify the trip. Giant singles cruising the sand, massive shoals pushing across the flats, opportunities on every tide regardless of conditions. Most destinations give you a window. Alphonse gives you a full day. It may well be the finest bonefish fishery on earth.
Beyond bonefish, Alphonse offers the Seychelles Big 5 - bonefish, permit, giant trevally, triggerfish, and milkfish are all genuinely in play on a single day. The milkfish population is the most consistent in the Seychelles. The triggerfish numbers are extraordinary. The lodge is world-class, the service exceptional, and the island is perfectly suited to non-fishing partners and families.

Pros:
Extraordinary bonefish population - giant singles and massive shoals
Incredible species diversity - always something to target regardless of tide
Beginner friendly and advanced friendly in equal measure
World-class accommodation and hospitality
Perfect for families and non-fishing partners
Cons:
Sees the most fishing pressure of the five atolls
Like any destination, quiet weeks do happen
Trophy fish require a higher level of technical skill
Not the first choice if GT is your only target - Alphonse specialises in bonefish, triggers, and milkfish
Cosmoledo Atoll

If giant trevally is what you came for, Cosmoledo is the answer.
The GT capital of the world is not a marketing claim - it's what guides and anglers who have fished every atoll in the Seychelles consistently say about Cosmoledo. 200 GT weeks happen here. The numbers are extraordinary, the fish are quality, and the raw, wild landscape they inhabit makes every session feel like an adventure.
The atoll is not the most species-diverse in the Seychelles, but what it does, it does better than anywhere else on earth. Trophy bonefish and permit are present in smaller numbers, and the triggerfish fishing is solid on the right tides. The accommodation is comfortable and the overall experience, while more remote than Alphonse, is well supported.

Pros:
Arguably the finest GT fishing in the world - 200 fish weeks are possible
Trophy bonefish and permit, though not in large numbers
Raw, wild, and extraordinary landscape
Comfortable accommodation for such a remote destination
Cons:
Limited species diversity compared to other atolls
GT fishing can require patience - finding them takes reading the tides carefully
Exposed to heavy weather and wind
Farquhar Atoll

Farquhar is the land of the giants.
This is the atoll that consistently produces the biggest GT coming out of the Seychelles. Combine that with genuine shots at bumphead parrotfish - one of the rarest and most surreal species you can target on a fly rod - world-class triggerfish, and solid permit fishing across an expansive, diverse landscape, and you have one of the most compelling fly fishing destinations on earth.
The accommodation is comfortable and the overall operation is run exceptionally. Farquhar does come at a premium price point, and the weather can be serious at times, but the fishing makes it worth it.

Pros:
Consistently produces the largest GT in the Seychelles
Genuine shots at bumphead parrotfish - a bucket list species
World-class triggerfish across a stunning and varied landscape
Opportunities at trophy Indo-Pacific permit
Expansive atoll with diverse fishing environments
Cons:
Prone to serious weather conditions
The more expensive option among the five atolls
Astove Atoll

Astove is not for everyone. It is, however, unforgettable for the right angler.
Raw, rugged volcanic terrain, serious surf zones, and a unique lagoon system that holds extraordinary populations of permit and GT.
Bonefish and permit in the surf - a combination you will not find anywhere else in the Seychelles. Giant bonefish pushing double figures. A wader's paradise from start to finish.
The fishing here requires more of the angler than any other atoll on this list. The terrain demands physical effort, the conditions can be tough, and the skill required to land fish in the surf around coral is significant. But the rewards - the size of fish, the raw environment, the challenge - are unlike anything else available in the Indian Ocean.

Pros:
Extraordinary GT fishing with exceptional average size
Giant bonefish in the surf - some of the biggest in the Seychelles
The finest permit population in the Seychelles
True wader's paradise - perfect for hardcore fly anglers
Opportunities across every tide
Cons:
Significant mosquito presence
Rough terrain requiring extensive walking - not ideal if you prefer skiff fishing
Providence Atoll

Providence is the holy grail.
The largest atoll in the Seychelles outer islands, and the one that sees the least fishing pressure of all. Most fish on Providence have never seen a fly, and their reaction to a well-presented pattern reflects that entirely. The fishing is extraordinary precisely because the atoll is so rarely visited.
Providence is a liveaboard operation - you live on a boat for the week and fish new sections of the atoll every day. The variety of terrain covered in a single week is unmatched by any other Seychelles destination.
Bumphead parrotfish up there with Farquhar, record GT numbers, crazy triggerfishing, and virtually zero competition on the water.
It is the most expensive Seychelles option. It is also, for the serious angler who has fished elsewhere in the world, the most extraordinary.

Pros:
Virtually zero fishing pressure - most fish have never seen a fly
New water every single day across a giant atoll
Bumphead parrotfish up there with the best in the Seychelles
Record GT numbers
Extraordinary triggerfishing
Cons:
Liveaboard format - not suited to everyone
The most expensive Seychelles optionRem
