the destination
Ascension Bay sits on the southeast coast of Mexico's Yucatan Peninsula, tucked inside the Sian Ka'an Biosphere Reserve — 1.3 million acres of protected wilderness that has never seen commercial fishing or development. The result is one of the most prolific and diverse saltwater fisheries in the entire Caribbean, and arguably the finest permit destination on earth. Mayazul Lodge is located in the small beachfront village of Punta Allen, roughly 45 kilometres off the beaten path and three hours from Cancun. It's intimate — just four rooms — and perfectly positioned to access the flats that have made Ascension Bay famous. The bay has been referred to as the Permit Capital for good reason. The population here is extraordinary — one of the largest in the world — and it's growing. Strict conservation regulations implemented years ago mean the fishing gets better every season. Beyond permit, the bay holds the largest bonefish population per square acre of water anywhere in the world. Twenty to thirty fish days are a regular occurrence. Migratory tarpon arrive in summer averaging 70 pounds, with fish over 130 possible. Snook, triggerfish, jacks, and barracuda complete the picture. Grand Slams and Super Slams are genuinely achievable on Ascension Bay — not just an aspiration.
guide's verdict
"Ascension Bay is in a league of its own when it comes to permit fishing — the population is extraordinary and the guides are obsessed with these fish. Add summer migratory tarpon averaging 70 pounds, baby tarpon year-round, and the largest bonefish population per acre on earth, and you have one of the most complete flats fisheries anywhere. The Sian Ka'an Biosphere ensures it only gets better with time."
